Saying Goodbye and Hello - March 26, 2014

This time of the year is always an exciting and a sobering time for a college basketball program.  It is a time that we find ourselves looking into next year; but, also saying good-bye to three seniors who invested a lot throughout their college careers into the Moravian College basketball program.  While we never want to see players go, our staff is confident these three guys will move on to great things in life after college and become successful at each of their individual paths.

Our underclassmen and coaches have begun to look forward to next season and the changes that must be made in order to make a run in the conference playoffs.  Our guys have started their off-season strength and conditioning program and basketballs can be heard bouncing in Johnston Hall throughout the day as they have hit the spring determined to get better as an individual and a team.  It’s refreshing to see the guys that really want to work hard as they stop by the office before and after workouts.

The Spring also brings excitement as we begin to find out what future Greyhound basketball players will become a part of our family next fall.  We will look to all of our returning guys to take this new class under their wings and teach them the meaning of being a Moravian College basketball player.

We feel our future is bright and our energy level is high in the Greyhound program.  We have started to talk with our guys about having a “Lunch Pail” mentality every time they step on the court or in the weight room.  A mentality that says we are here to roll up our sleeves and get to work.  If we do our part and show up to work every day, then next season should be a successful one for all those involved with Greyhound basketball!

Back to Conference Action - January 10, 2014

We find ourselves in an exciting time of the season as we head back into conference play and out of our 36th Annual Roosevelt’s Greyhound Classic tournament. As we gear up to play Goucher College this weekend, we are trying to improve upon a three-game winning streak and keep our momentum rolling. In our two tournament games this past weekend, our team played excellent team basketball. We have been preaching “together” to our guys all season, and this past weekend we feel as a coaching staff that together is exactly how we played. Our players showed great trust in their teammates to make the right play, different guys stepped up in big situations to make plays, and our bench was tremendous with energy and enthusiasm to carry our team to our third Greyhound Classic championship in four years.

With multiple opportunities for young players to get experience in our two tournament games, our coaching staff is hoping we can continue to rely more and more on our younger players to make plays for us in big games. We go into our contest tomorrow afternoon with Goucher with confidence that our team brand of basketball can compete with any team on our schedule; but, with a hunger to fight for 40 minutes and earn a tough conference win at home. As we continue to work towards our goals, we know the only way to achieve them is if we do it all together. Only five guys can play together on the court, but all 18 of our guys are responsible for every play made every time we step on the floor to compete.

Get out to an upcoming home game in Johnston Hall as we play Goucher at 2 p.m. on Jan. 11, Drew at 7 p.m. on Jan. 15 and Susquehanna at 2 p.m. on Jan. 25.

Hounds Optomistic about 2014 - January 2, 2014

We hope everyone has had a great holiday season is looking forward to 2014. The Moravian College Men’s basketball team certainly is looking forward to the new year. There are lots of reasons for the Greyhound men’s basketball team to be optimistic about the upcoming 2014 portion of this season’s schedule:

  • The Hounds ended the 2013 portion of the season on a high note with a 72-57 conference victory over USMMA just one day after the Mariners had defeated preseason favorite Scranton on the road.
  • The schedule in November and December was a tough one as the nine opponents played in 2013 have won over 60% of their games.
  • Injuries & illness plagued the team during this early part of the season as 7 different players missed game time during this span.
  • The team is relying on freshmen and inexperienced upperclassmen for depth and this showed in some of the team’s early season play.

It is expected that the new year will bring a healthy team back to campus with confidence that the experience gained in 2013 will help the team jell on the court.  We are hopeful that this will produce a successful run at the conference playoffs.  We are looking forward to seeing many of you at the Roosevelt’s Greyhound Classic on January 4th & 5th.  Also don’t forget our Alumni Game on Saturday January 11th at 12 noon followed by our first conference of the new year against Goucher at 2 pm.

Midseason Report - January 30, 2012

The Moravian College Greyhounds are now two games into the second half of the Landmark Conference regular season schedule and we are very excited about our chances of qualifying for the conference playoffs.  After last weekend’s successes at Goucher and Catholic our record in conference play is 6-3 and we are tied for second with Susquehanna and Juniata, just one game behind Scranton at 7-2. We are led on both ends of the floor by junior guard DJ Strayhorn and forward Garrett Johnson who,  like our entire team, have raised the level of their play at the most important time of the season.  Our goal at the beginning of the season was to continue to improve throughout the season and play our best basketball at the end of the season.  Our team has also become an excellent road team as we are 3-2 on the road in the conference and 5-4 overall.  We are still a relatively young team as there is only one senior in the starting lineup and seven of our first ten players are underclassmen.  We become more experienced as the season progresses and our close early season losses have now become victories.  Our final three home games (February 3rd & 4th and February 18th) all promise to be excellent games as they are against the three teams tied with or ahead of us.  We hope that our fans will join us for the excitement.
