Recap of First Day at 2012 Landmark Conference Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Host and four-time Landmark Champions Moravian College sits atop the men’s and women’s standings after six completed events following the first day of competition at the 2012 Landmark Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The Greyhound men hold a slim 17-point edge over Susquehanna University having compiled 77 points on day one. The Crusaders follow with 60 points, followed by Juniata College with 41 and the United States Merchant Marine Academy with 30. Goucher College has 14 points in the men’s standings, while The Catholic University of America earned 11.

In the women’s meet Moravian collected 79 points by winning a pair of events on the first day. Catholic sits in second after three events and earning 54 points. Susquehanna is third with 46 and Juniata claimed 37 to sit in fourth. Goucher has 17 points in fifth place, and USMMA is sixth with no points through the first six events.

Day one saw one Landmark record established on the men’s side, and three meet records set in both men’s and women’s competition.

Moravian’s Dillon Farrell established one of those meet records as he ran 31:46.52 to win the 10,000-meter run. Timothy Layng also earned a win with a meet record for the Greyhounds as he cleared 4.80-meters to win the pole vault.

Juniata’s Justin Clapper set the new Landmark record on day one as he won the discus with a toss of 45.41 meters. His teammate Ceth Parker also claimed a win on the first day, besting the field in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 3:57.24. USMMA’s Chris Cook placed first in the long jump with a leap of 7.06-meters and Ken Schetroma of Susquehanna rounded out the winning efforts on day one with a toss of 14.73-meters to place first in the shot put.

In the women’s meet Moravian got a new meet record from Abigail Schaffer as she cleared 4.09-meters to win the pole vault. Cadee Rockwell also earned a win for Moravian as she placed first in the 1,500 for the second-consecutive season, running a time of 4:48.68.

Catholic senior Kelly Carioto swept the throwing events on day one to help the Cardinals stay within striking distance of Moravian. She placed first in the shot put with a mark of 11.88-meters and also won the discus with a throw of 37.96-meters. Her teammate Camelia Mayfield established a new meet record with a time of 38:32.72 to win the 10,000 to give Catholic a third victory. Goucher’s Destiny Phillips produced the third meet record on the women’s side as her leap of 5.71-meters was a new meet mark and was good for a win in the long jump.

The Landmark Championship will conclude on Sunday with finals in 12 individual events and two relays for the women and men.
