Katie O'Rourke
Katie is a senior on the women's basketball team, and she is majoring in mathematics and secondary education at Moravian.
Hometown: Palmyra, Pennsylvania
High School: Palmyra
Major: Mathematics/Secondary Education
Why did you choose Moravian College?
There are a variety of reasons, but the biggest reason was
the versatility that I noticed at Moravian. Each individual
student is strongly encouraged to get involved in the Moravian
community in a variety of different roles. I was actively involved
in high school and was looking for a place where that could
continue. It is especially great for student-athletes because they
have the special role of being an athlete, but are extremely
capable of being more than that.
What is your major and why?
I am majoring in mathematics and secondary education.
I've wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, and math
has always been my favorite subject.
What has been your favorite course at Moravian and why?
My favorite course so far has been Discrete Mathematics
because it was different than many math courses I have taken. It
was focused on proofs and reasoning rather than just computing
answers, so it was a nice change of pace.
What are your plans for the future once you finish your
degree at Moravian?
I plan on looking for a teaching job in the vicinity of
my hometown and assisting my high school basketball coach.
What is your most memorable moment as a Greyhound?
One of my most memorable moments from this past season
was our Pink Out game against Juniata. It is an event that our
program puts a lot of time and effort in to, and it such a
rewarding feeling when we have so much success in supporting a
great cause. In my opinion, it was also the most exciting game we
had all year. Although we came up a few points short in the end, it
made the entire event that much better.
How has being an athlete helped you as a student and in
the classroom?
Being an athlete and a student has helped me stay
disciplined because of the many responsibilities I have in both
roles. It is not an easy task, but is something that will be
extremely beneficial later in life. The ability
to juggle a lot of responsibilities and good time
management are skills that will be very important in the
future, and those are two things that being a student-athlete can
give you.
What is the hardest part of your sport?
I would say the hardest part of playing a sport for me is
stirring up all of the energy that is required to take
care of my academic as well as athletic responsibilities. It
doesn't take long to feel exhausted and even overwhelmed when
there's a lot on your plate. It is difficult sometimes, but I
am motivated by the people around me and the pride that Moravian
takes in being a successful student-athlete.
Why do you wear your jersey number?
I began wearing #11 in eighth grade and I was lucky to be able to
continue that in college.
What advice do you have for a prospective Moravian
College student-athlete?
I would advise prospective student-athletes to embrace
all that Moravian has to offer. Moravian has a rich athletic
history, but pay attention to other aspects as well. It may
not be the biggest or flashiest school in your college pool, but it
is a great place filled with great people and many opportunities to
get you where you want to be.
