TOWSON, Md. --- The 2015-16 Moravian College men's indoor track and field team was selected first overall in the Landmark Conference preseason poll as chosen by the Landmark coaches.
The team returns 28 student athletes from last year's Landmark Conference Championship squad as well as adding 24 new student athletes. The team received a total of 60 votes, which was 15 more than the next closest team and six first-place votes. The Hounds return seven First Team All-Conference performers including shotput champion Parker Munson, weight throw champion Greg Cahill, pole vault champion Ryan Karnopp, high jump champion and Field Athlete of the Year Kahron Walker, long jump champion Gavin Bailey and 800 meter champion Cory Taggert. They also return two Second Team nominees in Matt Barnett and Matt Jones while Eric Morton was the Rookie of the Year.
"We took some hits like the women, but return a lot of athletes we're excited about," commented Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "Gavin and Ryan return with NCAA experience and we hope we can get a few others, along with them, to qualify for NCAAs either indoors or outdoors this year. Kahron is certainly among a few we have in mind. We were able to bring in some pretty good depth in this recruiting class in most events including some athletes that I think could hit ECAC marks even as freshmen. The workouts have been going well, we have some good experience returning, so we're content with where we stand as of November.
"I know we were picked first but that doesn't mean much to us. The respect is nice, but it still doesn't mean much," continued Baumann. "Most importantly, although we have good talent, it means absolutely nothing if we don't make a daily commitment to getting better, not just on the track, but outside of practice as well. It's something we really stress as coaches. If our team can make that daily commitment to the process then I think we could have some success in the Championship season, but we'll just have to see how things go over the next few months."
The Greyhounds will compete in their first meet of the season at Lehigh University for the Fast Times Before Finals meet on Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5.
