WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Dillon Farrell of the Moravian College men's cross country team won first place medalist honors on Saturday afternoon at the 2013 Landmark Conference championships at the United States Soldiers and Airmen's Home, hosted by the Catholic University of America.
Farrell's gold medal and first-place time of 26:42.50 on the 8,000-meter course helped the Greyhounds finish fourth out of seven teams at the conference meet, where Moravian was two-time defending champions.
Farrell's time was 19 seconds faster than runner-up Alex Price of Susquehanna University, who dominated the team title with 22 points, 33 points ahead of second-place Juniata College. Farrell finished ahead of four Susquehanna harriers occupying the second through fifth final positions.
"Dillon did everything he had to do to win today," head coach Jesse Baumann said. "He also saved some energy for Regionals. We got what we expected out of him. We wanted him to engage the field for three miles, and then take off. We like to control the pace of the race and then make a move. He executed that perfectly."
Junior Alec Duncan stayed up front with Farrell through the opening portion of the championship 8K, and eventually finished in seventh place overall out of the 77 runners on Saturday. Duncan stopped the clock at 27:39.20, just 10ths of a second behind the sixth place finisher.
Sophomore Maxwell Korten, freshmen Cory Taggert and Andrew Reed all finished in the top 50 to round out the team scorers for Moravian.
Freshman Liam Magerr finished right behind that group in 47th place.
In addition to the individual Landmark title, Farrell took home another monumental award from Washington, D.C. on Saturday. The junior was named the 2013 Landmark Conference Performer of the Year for men's cross country.
The Greyhounds return to the cross country trails for the 2013 NCAA Division III Mideast Region Championship, hosted by Muhlenberg College at Lehigh University on Saturday, Nov. 16.
