Paul Engelhardt will begin his 12th season in 2018 as just the fifth head coach of Moravian College's baseball program since the school began the sport in 1935. Engelhardt has posted a 253-194 record in his first 11 seasons; including leading Moravian to Landmark Conference Championships in 2010 and 2013, and making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history in 2010 and trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and 2014. 2010’s successful campaign yielded Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year honors for Engelhardt and his staff, and he was also named the 2014 D3baseball.com Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. In 2014, Moravian set the school record for wins with a 32-12 record and a Landmark Conference Tournament berth, breaking the mark of 31 wins set in 2011. He has led the Greyhounds to four seasons that set a new win mark for the program, and Engelhardt guided the Hounds to eight straight Landmark Conference Tournament berths from 2009 through 2016.
During Coach Engelhardt's first 11 years at Moravian, the Greyhounds have produced exceptional players on and off the field. Engelhardt has had 52 All-Conference selections (2-Commonwealth, 50-Landmark) since his inaugural season in 2007. Of those 52 All-Conference players, 28 have been 1st Team selections and 24 have been 2nd Team selections. He also produced two Landmark Conference Players of the Year, three Landmark Conference Pitchers of the Year and four Landmark Conference Rookies of the Year.
In addition to the all-conference honorees, the Greyhounds have produced four D3baseball.com and three ABCA/Rawlings Division III All-Americans, one Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Year, one Mid-Atlantic Player of the Year, 11 ABCA/Rawlings All Mid-Atlantic Region and 10 D3baseball.com All Mid-Atlantic Region selections, two ABCA/Rawlings Mid-Atlantic Region Gold Glovers, seven ECAC South All-Stars, one ECAC South Rookie of the Year and one ECAC South Player of the Year.
Not only have the Greyhounds performed well on the field under Coach Engelhardt, but they have done an excellent job in the classroom. The team’s overall GPA has consistently stayed over 3.0 and 65 players have been named to the academic honor roll including an All-Academic Team member in 2010 and 2011.
Engelhardt came to Moravian after five years as a an assistant coach at Lafayette College where he served as the Leopards third base coach, hitting instructor and defensive catchers and outfield coach. While at Lafayette, Engelhardt helped the team participate in three Patriot League Tournaments with a runner-up finish in 2004, and he also served as recruiting co-coordinator and co-camp director.
Engelhardt was also assistant coach at Muhlenberg College for one season in 2000-01. His other local coaching experience includes a year and a half as assistant head coach of the Freemansburg Senior Legion team and five seasons as head coach of the Lower Nazareth Phillies of the Blue Mountain League (1998-2002), which included two runner-up finishes.
Engelhardt, a member of the American Baseball Coaches' Association, earned a Bachelors of Science in Psychology with minors in business, legal studies and political sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in 1996. Engelhardt lives in Saucon Valley with son, Elias (15), and daughter, Sophie (10).
