Eight Moravian Football Players Named to Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll
Seniors linebacker Douglas DiMattia and offensive lineman Ed Matta and Louis Scalia, junior linebacker Jake Hildebrand, defensive back Travis King and running back C.J. Billera and sophomores offensive lineman Julian DiGiacomo and wide receiver Vince Reed have been named to the 2011 Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll
LANCASTER, PA --- Seniors linebacker Douglas DiMattia (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove HS) and offensive lineman Ed Matta (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East HS) and Louis Scalia (Hockessin, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), junior linebacker Jake Hildebrand (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS), defensive back Travis King (Wilmington, DE/Concord HS) and running back C.J. Billera (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus HS) and sophomores offensive lineman Julian DiGiacomo (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley HS) and wide receiver Vince Reed (Sicklerville, N.J./St. Joseph HS) have been named to the 2011 Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.
The Centennial Conference recognized student-athletes for performance in the classroom and field of play including 56 football players. To be nominated for the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll, a student must meet the following criteria: be a starter or key reserve on the team, a sophomore or higher in class standing and have a cumulative GPA of 3.40 or higher.
DiMattia was a starter all season for Moravian, and he had 36 tackles with a half a tackle for loss, a half a sack, a blocked kick, three passes defended and two interceptions that were both returned for touchdowns, one of 50 yards versus Juniata College and one of 31 yards at Dickinson College. DiMattia, who was also the team's long snapper this season, is majoring in finance.
Matta, Scalia and DiGiacomo helped the Moravian offense average 112.5 yards per game in the passing game and 101.9 yards per contest on the ground. Matta started games at both left guard and right tackle during the season and is majoring in accounting while Scalia became a starter halfway through the season at right guard and is majoring in biology. DiGiacomo was the team's starting left tackle in all ten games, and he is majoring in accounting.
Hildebrand played in seven games before an injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. Earning a spot on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll for a second straight year, Hildebrand contributed 48 tackles with seven and a half tackles for loss, one and a half sacks, a pass break-up, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Hildebrand is majoring in mathematics and secondary education.
King, who is also on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll for a second straight season, had a team high five interceptions with 79 return yards including back-to-back two interception games to finish the season. He also added 45 tackles, one and a half tackles for loss, eight passes defended, two fumble recoveries with 15 yards in return, ten punt returns for 93 yards and 21 kickoff returns for 356 yards. King is majoring in business management.
Billera played all ten games for the Greyhounds with six starts. He had 95 carries for 253 yards and three touchdowns, and he caught 14 passes for 116 yards and a score, returned five punts for 16 yards and returned two kickoffs for 30 yards. Billera, who transferred to Moravian this fall from McDaniel College, is majoring in organization theory.
Reed is in his second season with Moravian, and he caught 13 passes for 144 yards in nine games this fall. Reed is still deciding on a major.
The Greyhounds finished the 2011 season with a 2-8 overall record and a 2-7 mark in Centennial Conference action.
