ANNVILLE, Pa. --- Four former Moravian College golfers have been named to the MAC 100 Century Team with one golfer each from the 1964-73, 1974-83, 1984-93 and 2005-12 eras.
As a part of the MAC 100 celebration, the Middle Atlantic Conference is recognizing the top athletes from conference history, naming student-athletes to Century Teams in each sport from each era. Eras were delineated based on conference membership and sport sponsorship. The number of individuals selected per team varies depending upon the nature of the sport. Century Teams were selected from an online fan vote combined with the MAC Sports Information Directors vote. Team members will receive a commemorative gold coin, distributed to their alma matter.
Wayne Marish ('73) averaged 79.71 strokes per round in his career, which is still the seventh best career average in school history, over a total of 45 rounds. Marish tied for fourth at the MAC Championships in 1971 as a sophomore, and he was 22nd as a senior and 28th as a junior. During his freshman year, Marish averaged 77.67 strokes per round, the eighth best single season in school history.
Karl Gilbert ('80) competed for the Greyhounds for three seasons, and had a pair of top ten finishes at the MAC Championships, tying for seventh as a sophomore in 1978 and tying for third as a senior in 1980. Gilbert is fifth in school history with a career scoring average of 79.23 over 26 rounds, and his senior year saw him average 77.11, which is fifth in the school record book. Gilbert placed 31st in the MAC Championships as a junior.
Mike Weiner ('91) was a four-year letterwinner for Moravian, and he was the runner-up at the 1990 MAC Championship. Weiner had a career average of 82.8 over 49 rounds, and he had another top ten finish in 1991 with a seventh place at the MAC Championships while playing in the conference tournament all four years.
Brian Bergstol ('07) led the Greyhounds to the Commonwealth Conference championship in 2006 while being named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 after winning the individual conference title. Bergstol was a three-time Commonwealth All-Conference First Team selection, and he was the Commonwealth Rookie of the Year in 2004. Bergstol owns both Moravian records for scoring average for a season with a 71.93 average of 14 rounds in 2007 and for a career at 75.40 over 68 rounds. He was a four-time Ping/Golf Coaches Association of America All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team player, and Bergstol was also the 2007 MAC Senior Scholar-Athlete for golf and on the ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team.
