TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian University graduate student distance runner Cole Stanchina and sophomore thrower Anthony Morillo have been selected as the Landmark Conference Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Stanchina finished 36th in the invite 10,000-meter run at the Bucknell University Bison Outdoor Classic Saturday night as he set the school and Landmark Conference record with an All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference and PR time of 30:29.69.
"Cole is the type of runner where the longer the event, the more he excels," noted Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jesse Baumann. "When we started to see his 5k times dropping into the mid 14:40s during the indoor season, we knew he'd have the fitness he needed to better Dillon Farrell's 10k record at some point as long as we could find the right opportunity. Bucknell is always a loaded field, and Saturday was no different with dozens of runners he was able to latch onto to help pull him on record pace. He was ticking off splits that gave him a chance at a sub 30:00 through about the 4-mile mark, which would have been an incredible time, but he still managed to find a group that could keep him on some 75s through the final 3k to keep him under 30:30 and set both the Moravian school, and Landmark Conference record for the 10k.
"Cole hadn't felt quite as strong in his past few 5ks, so it certainly wasn't a foregone conclusion that he'd have a race like this, but to his credit he managed a PR of a minute, which is a margin of improvement you don't often see from seniors," Baumann finished.
Morillo, who earned his second Landmark Conference honor in the last three weeks, captured first in the shot put at the DeSales University Invitational with a toss of 14.27 meters (46-10).
"Anthony had another good meet this past weekend at DeSales given the cold and wet conditions," stated Throwing Coach Jonathan D'Ottavio. "Anthony has been very consistent so far during this outdoor season. He's really beginning to dial in his technique at practice and it's starting to show in the meets. Another few weeks and some better weather he will be right where he wants to be by Landmark Championships."
Moravian is slated to return to action on Friday, April 18 when the team hosts the Coach P Invitational with action beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Timothy Breidegam Track.
