BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University has selected Amable Martinez as Head Women's Volleyball Coach effective July 14.
"I am excited to announce Amable Martinez as our new Head Volleyball Coach," said Director of Athletics Mary Beth Spirk. "I am confident that Amable will be a positive influence on our players, not just on the court, but in life as well. It was obvious from the first meeting with Amable that he stood out among a very strong candidate pool. He is a proven winner, and I know will guide our team to new levels of success. We look forward to having him join our Greyhound family."
Martinez comes to Moravian after two seasons as the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at Long Island University.
"First I would like to say thank you to Mary Beth Spirk, Morgan Mercier, Dr. Loyd and the entire hiring committee for believing in me to lead the Moravian University volleyball program," stated Martinez. "It is an exciting time to join the Moravian University Athletic department, from the moment I stepped on campus I felt the commitment to the student-athletes, the camaraderie within the staff and the growth happening around campus which is amazing. I feel there is great opportunity for the holistic growth throughout, can't wait to get started and be part of it."
Martinez was the Director of Volleyball at St. Francis (N.Y.) College from 2019-23 and the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at Saint Peter's (N.J.) University from 2017-19. His other coaching stops include the Lead Assistant Men's Volleyball Coach at Stevens Institute of Technology in 2017-19 and the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at Bloomfield (N.J.) College from 2012-17.
"I have been fortunate enough to coach at all levels in college, built great connections and many learning experiences which should help in the continuous growth of the program here at Moravian," Martinez commented. "Hoping my experiences with the combination of the desire shown to me by the current student-athletes will lead to success with extremely hard work and collaboration."
Moravian is set to begin the 2025 campaign at the Elmira (N.Y.) College Tournament on August 29-30, and the Greyhounds will make their 2025 home debut on Wednesday, September 3 when rival Muhlenberg College comes to Johnston Hall at 7:00 p.m. for a non-conference contest.
"First, I would say the program was left in a great place by the previous coaches with continuous success," Martinez said. "Our goals are to first get back to the conference post season, overall to be a contender year in and year out while maintaining our overall well-roundness as a program in academics and within the community. This will be a process as we all adjust but excited to go on this new journey."
Martinez began his coaching career as the Head Girls Volleyball Coach at Science Park High School in Newark, New Jersey from 2005-12. He graduated from Kean (N.J.) University in 2002 and played three seasons on the Cougar's baseball team. Martinez completed his master's in Administration and Supervision in Education at St Peter's University in 2012.
