#22 Greyhounds Open Landmark Conference Play with Sweep of Drew
The 22nd-ranked and three-time defending Landmark Conference Champion Moravian College softball team began its 2011 Landmark Conference season with a doubleheader sweep at Drew University Tuesday, winning both games 3-0.
The 22nd-ranked and three-time defending Landmark Conference Champion Moravian College softball team began its 2011 Landmark Conference season with a doubleheader sweep at Drew University Tuesday, winning both games 3-0.
In the opening game, Moravian, which has now won five straight games, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman catcher Cassie Ernst singled with two outs and scored on a two-run homer by junior pitcher Jenna Carmon, pictured at right. It was Carmon's second home run of the season.
The Greyhounds extended their lead to 3-0 with a run in the top half of the second. Freshman designated player Taylor Mihalik walked to start the inning, and she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Shannen Mohr. Freshman outfielder Miranda Sergas then connected on an RBI double to score Mihalik.
Drew had a 6-4 edge in hits in the opening game with first baseman Jillian Lusk going two-for-three for the Rangers. Carmon led Moravian with a one-for-three performance with her two-run homer.
Carmon tossed a six-hit shutout, her third straight shutout of the season and improved to 6-1 in the circle for the Greyhounds. Carmon also struck out seven batters in the game. Adriana Durso took the loss for Drew, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks to go with one strikeout.
Moravian would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning in the second game. Ernst led off with inning with a single, and after two infield outs moved Ernst to third, Mohr hit an RBI single for the first run of the game.
The Greyhounds added two runs in the top of the seventh for a 3-0 lead. Senior outfielder Amanda Paulus drew a walk to start the inning, and after two outs, Ernst drew another walk. Carmon then hit a two-RBI single to score Paulus and Ernst.
Moravian had a 5-1 edge in hits in the second game with Mohr, pictured at left, going three-for-three with an RBI, and Ernst going one-for-two with a pair of runs scored. Carmon was one-for-two with two RBIs.
Sophomore Alyssa Fegely tossed third shutout of the season and improved to 4-2 in the circle for the Greyhounds after allowing one hit and two walks while striking out seven batters. Durso also pitched the second game for the Rangers, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts.
