Moravian Falls to Wilkes on Homecoming
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University football team fell to visiting Wilkes University, 26-7, in a Landmark Conference game Saturday afternoon at Rocco Calvo Field as the Greyhounds celebrated Homecoming.

How It Happened
- The Greyhounds received the opening kickoff and picked up one first down before sophomore Jack Corrigan came on to punt
- The Colonels went three and out on their first possession but would get the ball right back when freshman running back Dorian Thomas fumbled on the Hounds' first play after the punt
- Wilkes turned the miscue into points, connected on a 28-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 6:59 to go in the first quarter
- The Blue & Grey were unable to move the ball and punted after three plays
- The Colonels then matched 78 yards in eight plays to find the end zone with a six-yard touchdown run to make the lead 10-0 with 1:32 left in the opening quarter
- The next three possessions ended in punts with two for the Greyhounds and one for the Colonels that was blocked by senior linebacker Chris Cacace
- Wilkes found its way into the red zone before sophomore defensive back Antonio Rivera forced a fumble that junior defensive back Aidan Lane covered in the end zone for a touchback
- Moravian was unable to move the ball and punted, and each squad punted once more before the Colonels ran out the clock to take a 10-0 lead into halftime
- The Colonels opened the second half with the ball but would punt with the ball going out of bounds at the five-yard line. On the Hounds' second play, Thomas was stopped in the end zone for a safety to make it 12-0 for Wilkes with 11:47 on the clock in the third period
- After the free kick, the Colonels put together a 13-play, 61-yard drive to score on a one-yard touchdown run to extend the advantage to 19-0 with 4:21 to go in the third quarter
- Moravian answered with an eight-play, 75-yard drive to get onto the scoreboard. Freshman quarterback Tommy Gontz tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Chris Brown in the right corner of the endzone. Corrigan came on to make the extra-point and cut the deficit to 19-7 with 49 seconds to go in the third quarter
- The Hounds had Corrigan onside kick after the score, and sophomore wide receiver Josh Ludlow covered the ball at the Wilkes 22-yard line to send the Blue & Grey offense right back on the field. Moravian had first-and-goal at the two-yard line but ended up turning the ball over on downs without scoring
- The Colonels moved the ball into Moravian territory before senior defensive back Julius Walborn intercepted a tipped pass to get the ball back for the Hounds
- However, the Blue & Grey ran just three plays before Gontz was interception near midfield. The Colonels turned the miscue into the final touchdown of the game on a 41-yard touchdown pass with 2:44 remaining
- The Greyhounds picked up two first downs before the clock ran out
Inside the Numbers
- The Greyhounds' offense registered 177 yards of offense on 56 plays with 113 yards passing and 64 yards rushing
- Gontz completed 8-of-20 passes in his collegiate debut at quarterback for 98 yards with one touchdown and an interception, and he also rushed for 21 yards on nine carries while sophomore quarterback RJ Hart was 1-for-3 for 15 yards
- Brown caught three passes for 49 yards with the touchdown while sophomore wide receiver Gavyn Gennarelli had two receptions for 15 yards. Ludlow had one catch for 24 yards while junior wide receiver Avery Koser added one reception for 11 yards
- Thomas led the rushing attack with 30 yards on 14 carries to go with one reception for 15 yards and two kickoff returns for 39 yards while graduate student running back Joey Richmond added three carries for 12 yards and one kickoff return for 14 yards. Senior running back Isiah Rico had one carry for five yards while sophomore running back Jed Bendekovits rushed twice o two yards and caught one pass
- Corrigan punted six times, all in the first half, for an average of 46.2 yards, and he kicked off twice for an average of 52.5 yards
- Lane and senior defensive lineman Nathan Carr each registered nine tackles to lead the Moravian defense with Lane recovering a fumble and Carr adding a tackle for loss
- Sophomore defensive lineman Kaelyb Barahona had seven tackles while Rivera, sophomore defensive back Antonio Bowen and senior defensive back Shea Endean all made six stops with Rivera contributing a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a pass break-up and Endean breaking up a pass
- Sophomore linebacker Malachi McNeil-Harrison and senior linebacker Ethan O'Neill both had four tackles with McNeil-Harrison adding a pass break-up and a quarterback hurry
- Cacace had three stops to go with the blocked punt while freshman linebacker Jamie Gutridge, sophomore linebacker Jack Tosh and junior defensive lineman Logan Arteaga all had three tackles as well with Tosh adding a half a tackle for loss
- Walborn made two tackles to go with his interception
