No. 22 Moravian Drops 8-5 Decision at No. 7 Christopher Newport (Va.)
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- The No. 22 Moravian University softball team saw host and No. 7 Christopher Newport (Va.) University rally twice to defeat the Hounds, 8-5, in the Cross Bay Bash Saturday.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- The No. 22 Moravian University softball team saw host and No. 7 Christopher Newport (Va.) University rally twice to defeat the Hounds, 8-5, in the Cross Bay Bash Saturday.
How It Happened
- The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third inning. Sophomore center fielder Shayla Morgan led off the frame with a single, and she raced home from second on an RBI single by junior catcher Marcie Silberman
- The Blue & Grey added three runs in the top of the fourth to stretch the advantage to 4-0. Sophomore pitcher Kyra Holtje drew a leadoff walk before graduate student second baseman Ajala Elmore singled. After a sacrifice bunt from junior third baseman Sydney Andrews, junior right fielder Sarah DeStefano hit an infield RBI single to score Holtje. Morgan had an RBI fielder's choice that brought Elmore across the plate while DeStefano raced home on an RBI single by senior shortstop Holly Walter
- The Captains countered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4
- Moravian retook the lead in the top of the fifth with a run for a 5-4 edge. Elmore singled with two outs, stole second and raced home on an RBI single by Andrews. DeStefano and Morgan followed with infield singles to load the bases; however, the Hounds were unable to add to the lead
- Christopher Newport tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth, and then scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to finish off the contest
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian has 12 hits in the contest with Andrews going 2-for-3 with an RBI and Morgan going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI
- Elmore was 2-for-4 and scored twice while DeStefano had a 2-for-4 game with a run and an RBI
- Silberman also posted a 2-for-4 day at the plate with an RBI while Gawrys had a hit, a double and an RBI
- Walter contributed a hit and an RBI while Holtje scored once
- Holtje started in the circle and had a pair of strikeouts in four innings of action while Andrews tossed the final two innings of the contest
