Hounds Rally in Final Two Minutes to Remain Undefeated with Two-Point Win over Wilkes in 2025-26 Home Opener
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men’s basketball squad saw a 15-point first half lead slip away before rallying from a six-point deficit in the final minute and a half to post a 93-91 Landmark Conference victory over visiting Wilkes University in the 2025-26 home opener as the Greyhounds improve to 4-0 for the first time since the 1974-75 season.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad saw a 15-point first half lead slip away before rallying from a six-point deficit in the final minute and a half to post a 93-91 Landmark Conference victory over visiting Wilkes University in the 2025-26 home opener as the Greyhounds improve to 4-0 for the first time since the 1974-75 season.
How It Happened
- The Hounds scored first as senior guard Porter Kelly drained a three-pointer on the first possession of the game, and senior guard Chad Kratzer made it 6-2 with a three-pointer. The Blue & Grey stretched the advantage to double digits on a three-pointer from senior forward Marquis Ratcliff connected on a three-pointer at the 14:38 mark for a 14-4 lead. Moravian edge stretched to 15 points at 28-13 on a lay-up from Krazter with 10:29 left in the first half, and a lay-up by junior forward Joel Baez had the Hounds on top 30-15 midway through the opening half
- The Greyhounds held a 39-27 lead after another three-pointer from Kelly with 6:10 to go until halftime before the Colonels climbed back in the contest and trailed by five, 43-38, with 1:37 on the clock. The Blue & Grey took a 49-40 edge to the intermission
- Wilkes scored the first five points of the second half to get within four at 49-45 before Kratzer drained back-to-back three-pointers to stretch the Hounds edge back to double digits at 55-45. Baez hit a lay-up for a 12-point edge, and Moravian was up 64-54 with 13:26 to play on a lay-up from Ratcliff. The Colonels answered with a 7-0 run to get with 64-61 before a three-pointer from Kratzer, and Wilkes tied the game at 67-67 with exactly ten minutes remaining
- The Colonels stretched their run to 17 straight points to build a 78-67 lead with 6:37 to play. Ratcliff snapped the run with a lay-up and he added two free throws to get the deficit back to single digits for the Hounds. Moravian got within two points at 84-82 when Kratzer connected on another three-pointer with 3:09 to play while Wilkes made the lead 90-84 with 1:22 to go. The Colonels led 91-86 with a minute remaining; however, the Greyhounds got within a point at 91-90 on a four-point play by Ratcliff as he was fouled while making a three-pointer with 39 seconds to go. Kratzer drove to the basket for the go-ahead lay-up with just five second left to put Moravian back on tip 92-91. Ratcliff added the final point with left than a second left when he drained a free throw
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had three players in double figures with Ratcliff netting a game-high 31 points to go with ten rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots for his fourth double-double of the season and 31st of his career. Ratcliff also became the eighth player in program history to reach 1,500 points, and he is now seventh with 1,512 points. The contest was Ratcliff's 11th career game with at least 30 points including his third this winter
- Kratzer tossed in 26 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists, two steals and six three-pointers while Kelly added 23 points, seven assists, three boards and four three-pointers
- Baez contributed six points, six rebounds and two assists while senior forward Liam Cummiskey had four rebounds and three points
- The Hounds bench registered four points with sophomore guard Dylan Costa adding three points and junior guard George Cutler scoring a point to go with a pair of assists
- Sophomore forward Brave Haugh and freshman forward Steve Conway both grabbed two rebounds
- Moravian shot 31-for-69 from the field (44.9 percent), 12-for-29 on three-pointers and 19-for-24 at the charity stripe while both squads grabbed 36 rebounds
- The Hounds improve to 4-0 on the year for just the fourth time in program history and for the first time since 1974-75. The only other two 4-0 starts were in 1962-63 and 1954-55
