TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian University sophomore Emma Shafnisky has been named as the Landmark Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for her performance last week.
Shafnisky captured first place in 100-meter hurdles at the Messiah University Invitational last Saturday with a school record and All-Atlantic Region Track & Field qualifying time of 14.67 seconds in the finals after running 15.00 seconds in the preliminaries. Shafnisky ran the anchor leg of the Hounds' winning 4x100-meter relay squad with an AARTFC qualifying time of 49.46 seconds, and she placed third in the long jump at 5.37 meters (17-7.5).
"We've been seeing this kind of improvement in Emma for a while, and in some cold racing conditions at Widener a few weeks ago when she nearly broke 15 seconds, we knew she was at a fitness level to take a shot at our school record whenever the weather conditions cooperated," commented Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jesse Baumann. "Her work ethic and eagerness to maximize her talent are second to none. She had some hamstring issues earlier in the fall season, and now that those have mostly subsided, she's had a long block of training without any interruptions which is how we're seeing such big jumps from her in all her events, but especially the hurdles right now."
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Friday and Saturday, April 17-18 as the Greyhounds host the annual Coach Pollard Invitational with competition beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
