Moravian Falls in Extra Innings at Wilkes
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad fell to host Wilkes University, 5-4 in ten innings, Sunday to wrap up a Landmark Conference series.
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad fell to host Wilkes University, 5-4 in ten innings, Sunday to wrap up a Landmark Conference series.
How It Happened
- The Colonels scored a run in the bottom of the first inning for an early 1-0 lead
- The Greyhounds countered in the top of the second frame with a run to knot the score at 1-1. Freshman second baseman Jack Cappo led off with a double but was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice alter inning the inning. Junior right fielder Domenic Venini drew a walk after Cappo's double, and he scored on an RBI single from sophomore shortstop David Vozzo
- Wilkes answered in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs for a 3-1 edge
- The Colonels added a run in the fifth to make it 4-1
- The Blue & Grey pushed two runs home in the top of the sixth to get within one run at 4-3. Cappo was hit by a pitch and sophomore third baseman Owen Ness singled with two outs. Sophomore left fielder Troy Rabosky was hit by a pitch to load the bases while Vozzo drew a walk to push Cappo across the plate. Senior first baseman Sean Superka was hit by a pitch as Ness touched the plate
- Moravian tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the top of the eighth inning. Vozzo connected on a two-out double, and he raced home on an RBI single by Superka
- Neither team was able to score a run in the ninth, forcing extra innings
- Wilkes won the game with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the tenth
- Both squads left the bases loaded during the game with the Hounds stranding three runners on in the sixth and the Colonels leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had six hits in the contest with Vozzo going 2-for-5 with a double, a run and two RBIs
- Superka was 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Cappo and Ness were each 1-for-3 with a run
- Junior designated hitter David Rodriguez added one hit while Venini scored once
- Sophomore Andre Sagrestano made the start on the hill for the Hounds, and he had four strikeouts in seven innings of action. Freshman Sean Heisler tossed two-thirds of an inning while junior Caden Ward pitched 1.1 innings. Junior Nick Leonard was on the mound for the final batter
